His immense contribution to the New Civil Code for which he is often referred to as the "father of the Dutch Civil Code". During the German occupation, his Jewish heritage made him a leading example of the protest of Leiden University against the dismissal of Jewish lecturers, in which the bold protest speech of his college Cleveringa played a significant role.
