Leiden Consultancy Services BV
LURIS Consultancy Services offers advice for scientists who wish to engage in consultancy work from Leiden University.
Consultancy Services from LURIS
Leiden Consultancy Services BV is a full subsidiary of the university that develops, facilitates and negotiates consultancy projects between academics and industry/ governments, both national and international, in all science areas of Leiden University.
The added value for the University lies in the interaction with third parties: Consultancy activities create opportunities for collaboration with profit and non-profit organisations, and may lead to new research projects, new inventions, new academic insights, traineeships, PhD exchanges, etc. For establishing better linkages with SME’s, consultancy activities are particularly useful. These interactions and the contribution to regional economic development also give strong political benefits. Moreover, consultancy activities can generate cash for the individual, the faculty or department and the University as a whole.
Strengthening the interactions between Leiden academics and industrial or societal organisations also improves the position of Leiden University when it comes to acquiring research grants from governmental subsidy schemes or major research initiatives such as FES or EU funding rounds. As consultancy activities are demand driven, they feed questions and information into the University which may inspire academics to the creation of new knowledge and inventions.
What can we offer you as an academic?
For a long time the University has been actively engaged in deploying academic expertise and knowledge transfer to companies and institutions. Our experience has shown that results from independent fundamental research create a strong basis for effective interaction between science and business. For all parties involved, value is added through knowledge exchange.
If you are (about to be) engaged in commercial interactions, you may need support to:
-
define a coherent consultancy project
-
include additional expertise in order to come to a multidisciplinary proposition
-
negotiate a better deal
-
discuss IP clauses and other contract terms
-
define “SMART” deliverables
-
have a personal indemnity insurance
-
have agreement from your management
-
send out invoices and ensure timely payments

All the different fields of science at Leiden University provide ample opportunities for consultancy projects. Alfa, Beta and Gamma scientists can offer their services and expertise and be engaged in challenging consultancy work, which is both interesting as well as scientifically relevant.
