Admission Procedure
- The specifics of the admission requirements and procedures are set by each Graduate School individually. However there are a few elementary procedural steps that are always required in order to be able to obtain a doctorate/PhD at Leiden University. These steps are mentioned here in short for your convenience and described in detail in the 'Leiden University PhD Regulations'.

Step 1 Find a supervisor Step 2 Admission by the Doctorate Board
Only for applicants without a Dutch university "doctoraal" or master's degree
The formal decision on admission rests with the Doctorate Board ("College voor de Promoties") of the University. The Board consists of the Deans of the faculties together with the Rector Magnificus as its chairman. Upon admission, the PhD candidate (and the professor who will act as supervisor) will receive a formal letter of acceptance from the Board.Step 3 Writing of a thesis Step 4 Admission to the defence Step 5 Public defence of the thesis
Immigration requirements for international applicants
For international applicants additional administrative procedures may also apply in relation to visa, residence permit and/or work permit requirements set by the government.
