Standard Evaluation Protocol

Since 2003, the research programmes of Leiden University  are assessed according to the Standard Evaluation Protocol (SEP). The evaluation system aims at three objectives with regard to research and research management:

  • Improvement of the quality of research through an assessment carried out according to international standards of quality and relevance;
  • Improvement of research management and leadership;
  • Accountability to higher levels of the research organisations and funding agencies, government, and society at large.
In 2008, an evaluation of the SEP 2003-2009 was undertaken by VSNU, KNAW and NWO. In this evaluation, universities and KNAW- and NWO-institutes underlined that the administrative burden should be diminished and that more emphasis should be placed on societal relevance and on benchmarking. The new SEP 2009-2015 has incorporated these elements.

The SEP can be downloaded from the following website KNAW/SEP.
