Michiel van Emmerik (1965) graduated at the University of Amsterdam with degrees in Dutch Law and International Law. He was Clerk at the Juvenile Court in Amsterdam. He was Researcher and Lecturer in Constitutional and Administrative Law at Leiden University from 1990-1999. In 1997 he defended his PhD thesis at Leiden University on Compensation for Violations of Human Rights (especially the ECHR). His supervisors were Professor Alkema and Professor Hijma. From 1999-2005 he was employed with the Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Division, Ministry of the Interior, The Hague, where he mainly was involved with legislation and advisory work in the field of Constitutional and Administrative Law. In April 2005, he was appointed associate Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law at Leiden University. His research focuses mainly on the interaction between International and European Law (EU and ECHR) on the one hand and Dutch Constitutional and Administrative Law on the other hand. His teaching concerns different aspects of Constitutional, Administrative, European (EU and ECHR) and International Law. Special point of interest are human rights and the rights of children. He is a Contributor to the Netherlands Human Rights Review/NJCM-Bulletin and Member of the Editorial Board of the Dutch Constitutional Law Review. In 2007 Michiel van Emmerik was appointed substitute judge at the Amsterdam District Court (section administrative law).
From January until April 2012 Michiel van Emmerik was visiting professor at Hastings College of the Law, University of California in San Francisco. He taught an Introductory course in European Union Law, with special attention to the handling of the euro crisis and the importance of human rights within the European Union. He also conducted comparative research into the position of parliaments in the field of fixing the budget.
