PhD Defense: Geerten Waling

Grassroots democracy, it usually is as tempting as it is problematic. This goes for the Occupy Movement and the Arab Spring, but also for the European "springtime of the peoples" of 1848. On May 24, 2016, at 4.15 pm, Geerten Waling will defend his thesis "1848 – Clubkoorts en revolutie. Democratische experimenten in Parijs en Berlijn" at the Academy Building, Leiden University. The thesis will be published simultaneously as a book by Vantilt (Nijmegen).

The European revolutions of 1848 were marked by barricades, constitutions and parliaments, but also by thousands of "democratic experiments" all over the continent: popular assemblies and clubs in which millions of citizens started to debate politics. In his PhD thesis, historian Geerten Waling has analysed the meetings and clubs in Paris and Berlin. He hopes to defend his thesis on May 24, 2016 at Leiden University. Both the thesis and the defense will be in Dutch.
